The hidden face of Project Scorpio

1920e7867762015c6a530aa13a05c9aa20170312

This analysis was made taking into account the Microsoft news of the past 2 years, the various speech picks from Microsoft and elsewhere and reports from Windows Central sources.

We are in March 2017, that is to say about 2 months of the reveal of Project Scorpio, this famous console of overboosed lounge to the hormoflops supposed to be sometimes a new generation for some, sometimes a simple PS4 Pro-like for others, And following the different marketing speeches of Microsoft, could be a simple Xbox One 4K native ... Yes but here, marketing is one thing and the reality is another. If marketing is in itself a simplified way of conveying a message or rather the message that arranges, the reality is usually found in the shadow sub-projects that navigate around the flagship project.

A console console is good, it forces the developers and the industry generally to improve their technique of optimization which allows in the end of life to see console games that seem to run on a machine that has undergone a boost Consequently in the course of generation not hardware but software. But now we are entering the era of hardwares revisions, the same economic model that runs many other technologies such as the car, the cell phone or the coffee machine ... The living room console has long remained tight to this economic model for The best as for the worst. Now that this is about to become a reality, we might wonder if the software component would not go to the background in favor of regular hardware review? The reality is quite different, at least in Microsoft's plans.

The Helix project represents what Microsoft expects from sofware once the hardware revision model is adopted.
In a world where one can change console of living room for a more powerful of the same family to the sandstone of the advanced of the new technologies like 4K, HDR, 8K, WiFi 802.11ax etc the number one goal of software n 'Is more genuinely push to optimization, it changes the battle horse and it is called interoperability. This is the challenge in vogue of any modern business and when you own an OS everything becomes easier. For a company like Microsoft the goal is to get all Windows compatible.

We are going to linger during this article on the underside of the Scorpio Project and show that it is far from making the 4K, its primary mission, the truth is elsewhere ......

What is Project Hélix?

Project Helix is at gaming at Windows what the spine is to the human being. This is the project that should allow Microsoft to recover the lead in terms of game development for its Xbox, attracting the developers en masse and all by itself guide the hardware choices of the Xbox Scorpio (and probably Xbox futures) And it is greedy Project Helix, it needs a lot of space, a lot of power.

"Project Helix" would promote the development of games for Xbox and Windows 10 Store. Microsoft would streamline the process by which developers create games for the Windows 10 Store, along with development kits that allow them to mimic the Xbox One environments but especially Project Scorpio and all kinds of PC hardware. The universal Windows platform would power the Scorpio games, and titles like Gears of War 4, ReCore and Forza Horizon 3 are already natively compatible between Xbox One, Project Scorpio and Windows 10 PC.
Project Helix is therefore the new philosophy of the Xbox development kit that would no longer be an Xbox development kit but a universal platform development platform Windows the famous UWP.

Through Project Helix, developers would no longer make games for Xbox but games for UWP, the Xbox being part of the fully compatible UWP hardwares among others may come. Microsoft having already opened the door to a hardware in the philosophy of the Switch if the latter was a success. UWP is already compatible with all Microsoft Hololens hardwares included. But be careful the developer

                                                               6a523a40f4632313d63deeace97732c020170329

Concretely ... What is UWP?

There is a confusion that lingers about the UWP explanation, a confusion that always comes from marketing and the message that it must send or that it does not send.
For many, a UWP application is an application that can run on all Windows hardwares out this is fake. UWP is simply a term for developers (and it must be understood that Microsoft is a firm whose marketing is addressed almost exclusively to professionals and therefore to developers). When Microsoft announces UWP it does not talk to you / us players or customers, it talks to developers. The nerve of war at Microsoft is the developer. It also suffices to see the number of times that Microsoft pronounces the word "developers" during an E3 or the sentence that accompanied the announcement of the Scorpio Project "We asked our friends about what they want".

UWP is an ecosystem that encompasses a universal library and API developers will be able to directly use and manage their applications on the Windows store. This does not mean that these applications work everywhere universally. Some applications will not run on all Windows devices because only if the developer activates the option when submitting the application to the store (and at the discretion of the developer), according to some sources, Of a universal application on this or that hardware would be as easy as a simple click in a box. In a simple way any application listed on the Windows store is technically a UWP application if and only if the developers decides to check all the boxes.

Good and for us? Games ? Microsoft wants the games to be developed under UWP. That is to say games developed on PC but which in fact are not on PC, they are on UWP.
But you will understand that for a Gears of War 4 to be deployed on PC, Xbox One and Scorpio, the developer, in this case The Coalition, must check the boxes PC, Xbox One and Scorpio!
The release of the Scorpio version promised in native 4K would be as simple as a click in a box thus and this would concern all the developers who will be interested in the development under UWP, we imagine the independents arrive en masse, besides according to ID @ Xbox is the best publishing platform for them now, another ID that is potentially interested by UWP, the Japanese developers, and we know that they are slowly switching to PC development, UWP Could present itself as a logical gateway to Japanese developers on Xbox.

Spencer: I want to have strong ties with third-party publishers, but paying them for exclusivity is not our long-term strategy.

We were talking about the future arrival of Gears of War in native 4K on Scorpio but Rod Fergusson explained that the current game was already compatible Scorpio (actually UWP all ...) but how will it turn into 4 on Scorpio? The famous patch day one?

What is Game Mode?

"If you have already played Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 or Rise of the Tomb Raider in 4K on a Hight PC, you already have an idea of Scorpio versions"

Microsoft is trying to put in place a development technique that would allow the developer to go out his game once on the Windows store under UWP but the latter would adapt itself to the detected hardware. As a result, the user does not encounter problems with the activation of options or different 4K or 60fps modes in the option menu, the game adapts that's all. The game runs on an Xbox One it adapts to 1,3TF, the game runs on a Scorpio the 6TF would be in the honor, ditto for the PC. This requires additional work on the part of the developer obviously but a job that will spare him the task of making patches only for video rendering. The game would already be future proof in the medium term we will say. The developer could thus tackle the patches (and let us be frank is the most important) and manage its application directly on the store.

For Microsoft the philosophy would be so very hardware oriented, we would have a game and several versions of this game because several hardware on which it would run.
More than ever the future of the Xbox platform appears as hardware.

The Game Mode that will be available on PC Windows 10 but also Xbox One to a lesser extent, would complete this development technique. Its goal is to allocate almost all the hardware resources to the game so that it behaves exactly like a console, in this case the Xbox One but using the resources available (PC and Scorpio)
The Game Mode is announced as pulling totally part of the Windows 10 UWP games but also and especially ..... Win32, this good old Win32 ...

What is Project Centennial?

Behind this somewhat barbaric name hides may be Microsoft's most aggressive project.
They work on 2 fronts, the first is to make UWP an extremely attractive platform for developers, ok, there will surely be developers who will work immediately their new games under UWP, besides Microsoft multiplies contracts with Third parties to propose UWP games. But what about games already out? This is more complex, it is obviously necessary to have a developers to completely re-encode his game Win32 (typically a game Steam therefore) to a new store, the store Win10 UWP. To be clear, it is almost impossible. The majority of Steam games are already running on Windows 7 or 10, Steam is a platform that has nothing more to prove, few developers will spend additional resources to bring out an old game on a store that has everything to prove unless Show them that this portage can be done ... in a click too?

Project Centennial is an interface that Microsoft calls "UWP Bridge" and allows the creation of a new UWP application race, Microsoft calls them the UWP Hybrids. Typically it is software from the Win32 world (Steam) that uses the "UWP bridge" to become UWP applications (Hybrids therefore).
Concretely this is a process of calling developers still in Win32, they will be able to reach a little UWP via UCP by progressively adding UWP functionalities to their Win32 games for the future to encode directly under UWP.
A year ago UWP was still too limiting to the developers just like Steam in its beginnings but things seem to improve at the conference Build and that's what this conference is used for.

                                                       6a523a40f4632313d63deeace97732c020170329

Yes but the 4K in all this?

Spencer: "We'll talk more about that later but we have never forced the 4K and we will not do it."

As we discussed above, do not fall into the trap of marketing, if Microsoft has deliberately pronounced the words true 4k true VR etc it is simply because the market seems to be heading towards these features and that speech is bearer in The media in addition to being also a summary way of announcing mass power.
If Project Scorpio was truly a 4K project Microsoft would not categorically claim that only their MS Studio games would be in 4K and that other developers would do what they wanted.
Microsoft is trying to put its machine in marketing terms on all fronts but the real purpose of the Scorpio project is not the 4K, it is simply to propose a ground to the developers close to the limitless (the famous no boundaries that accompanied l Project announcement). The console is actually abusively very powerful (according to a Steam survey the Scorpio specs correspond to a small minority of the specs of Steam players), again all this power is not made for the player but for the developer. Project Scorpio was due to be released once the satellite projects matured to complete the Helix vision of gaming at Windows. Scorpio needs to offer enormous computing power, memory space, graphics power, bandwidth to be able to ensure interoperability and full compatibility of UWP applications, Hybrid Application, PC port , Xbox 360 emulation, attract independent developers etc
It is not surprising and therefore no longer worry about the power of the console, because power, in the Helix vision is a necessity, there is no compromise to be made when proposing Which clearly resembles a Windows Machine .... If the Scorpio is so powerful it is because it should in no way limit any port from elsewhere and especially UWP. This power will allow it by default to propose a better 4K than the competition but ca ... it is just a collateral effect of the power of the console, it falls well it is the best point of comparison for the general public while Developers speak Hélix and UWP in their offices.

The Scorpio project, the Steam Killer?

Tim Sweeney: There are two programming interfaces for Windows, and each application must choose one of them. Every Steam application, every PC game for a few decades, used Win32. It has been both the basis of the dynamic software market we now have, but also malware. Any program can be a virus. Universal Windows Platform is considered an antidote to this. This is a sandbox, much more locked.

The risk here is that if Microsoft convinces everyone to use UWP, then removes the Win32 applications. If they can succeed in doing this, then it will be a small step to force all applications and games to be distributed via the Windows Store.

Killer may not be but Microsoft seems extremely well armed to shake Valve's hegemony, it really could be that we are in front of a Windows Machine or a UWP Box or something close to it.
If I dared I would say that Microsoft has clearly taken over from the Steam Machine but has the very big advantage of owning an OS that runs almost all PC games. In the wake of the satellite projects that sail around Project Helix, the backbone of the future of gaming at Windows, Microsoft has just spent 3 years placing its marbles on the gaming scene, totally oriented "opening" balls to purely and simply attract A maximum of developers to UWP.
This is how we could see how the ID @ Xbox program could explode with now more than 1000 games develop (According to Chris Carla) of which one can be sure that it will be for many games UWP With in addition as if that were not enough the new Xbox Live Creators Program that opens the Xbox One to the independent studios with very little means wanting to develop Xbox One games probably via UWP, one was able to see Microsoft officially accept the Cross Network as Sony Still refuses to apply for Playstation developers but allows PC and console players to compete on Gears of War 4 for example, the Cross Play introduced by the Play Anywhere Program as much as the Cross Save. Microsoft has also inaugurated prizes in line with the size of the teams working behind a game (Recore and Vodoo Vince), the Game Preview program begins to fill but will not explode as long as UWP and Scorpio will not be in symbiosis, The Game Pass just as the EA Access presents itself as a better alternative to okaz and softer than the 2013 vision, account sharing continues to inflate the demographics of xbox live and the future of the Xbox is far To close the door to technologies like RV provided it is well damaged.
In fact some media are wondering about the usefulness of Steam if Windows 10 happens to do what Microsoft has missed with Windows 8. It is also good to note that the first Steam Machine that came into being were running under WIndows because of Of the multiple delays caused by pad Steam. Let's be sure that Microsoft had the time to do the surveys he needed on these Xbox Scorpio before the time.
Spencer believes that it is not a question of ignoring the Steam platform for the moment, and even wants to develop games on Steam, a switch to UWP can not be done overnight for third parties as well as for Microsoft.

                                        6a523a40f4632313d63deeace97732c020170329

Objective to recover the lead in terms of development.

To push the pinnacle of his vision Helix, Microsoft needs to make developers want to come on Windows 10 / UWP platform but mostly to stay there. That is how for 3 years Microsoft has multiplied maneuvers for the comfort of developers via the purchase of different engines or software for integration directly into Windows.
Among the most notable maneuvers among the developers is the famous acquisition of Havok which allows the existence of Dead Rising as well as Uncharted 4 or The Last Guardian, then Microsoft bought the data optimization solution 3D by automatic reduction of the number of polygons, Simplygon, or the opening of the compiler DirectX HLSL very used on PC and game console.

Microsoft is trying to make Windows and therefore UWP a logical, not mandatory, but logical choice for any developers whether it be for the UWP-targeted fleet or the tools available to developers that will play heavily on game costs.
Developers are truly at the heart of Microsoft's vision because players are there or go developers and developers go where it's easy to work.
The Scorpio project is so built for this purpose that it has skipped the eSRam considered henceforth as an element limiting too much the space of work of the developers, in any case the Xbox must resemble the maximum to the PC and vice versa, the eSram Could therefore continue to exist for portages and taking advantage of the Game Mode. According to the latest declarations the eSram of the One does not pose any problem for the portages but one can be sure that if one day of the scorpio excluded point their nose within 2 years, it will be AAA wanting Emancipate itself from this limiting point on One.

                                     6a523a40f4632313d63deeace97732c020170329

Play Anywhere: the end of the console and the PC?

This is a bit of the idea ... For Microsoft if the PC players do not want to come on console it is the console that will go to them and vice versa if the console players do not want to go to PC it is the PC which Will go to them, There is no more room for debate, you buy your games once you play there or you like to play there and are able to free to switch from one world to another provided you play a game Game UWP futures.

According to Microsoft, the Scorpio project still wants to be a way for console players not to go on PC but this is a very commercial speech since in the universe UWP one does not play on console Or PC but under UWP and it must be present wherever a screen is present. (Even Hololens is saying ...)
UWP, as we have said above, seperates the development of a game in a console universe on PC but brings the PC experience on console of living room (besides remember that the combo keyboard mouse arrives on Xbox One and Project Scorpio) . The purpose is therefore to give birth to a direct competitor blind of Steam able to become so unavoidable that one would come to imagine this blind in a dedicated machine exactly like to tempted Valve. Blazers like Steam Google Play and IOS have shown the way, but none could venture to take advantage of a brand as reputed as the Xbox under a TV screen.

1952/5000

Beyond the marketing discourse that only overflies the Scorpio project with blows of 4K or 6TF we could see that the true goal of the Scorpio is in its inscription in the Project Helix, this project materializes the vision of Microsoft of Propose to developers a development kit allowing any developer to be first second or third party or independent, to develop once are game and to publish it on any support with a single click. The Scorpio Project is in a situation where it is obliged to propose a maximum power on a minimum of 6TF announced, Scorpio is not an end in itself it is simply a tool that allows the arrival of UWP in our TV Of living room.

This console, if it is a console will be presented as a "Windows Machine" whose game library would be strongly powered by UWP.
More than ever, the discourse around the 4K appears only as a marketing process aimed at the public who is not specially armed to hear the submarine speech addressed this time to professionals, this speech presents the Scorpio Project as a machine that Is voluntarily very powerful only to offer a comfortable workplace to facilitate porting Steam games, UWP applications that automatically adapt to hardware, development tools integrated directly in Windows or Windows support of portages within Of the Win10 family.

On paper this appears as a true Eldorado for any developer who could in a short time and without compromise publish a game on a park representing 25% of PDM for Win10 while waiting for the 50% migration still under Win7, La Xbox only representing "bonus" in this case would include the orientation "niche market" of the Scorpio and a high price not impacting the roadmap.

Come dice Gus quel prezzo è troppo basso, se volevo un cesso a 400 Euro prendevo la Ps4Pro, a me frego zero se MS vende o meno alla massa sono paranoie da forum e soprattutto da sonari....
