Coming from a Reddit AMA with Yacht Club...
How composer Manami Matsumae got involved...
"It was crazy, we got an email from the guys over at Koopa Soundworks ( koopa.tv ) asking if instead of money support, if they could just put us in touch with the legendary composer of the first Mega Man game. We immediately took him up on his offer! She's very excited about working with us and Virt [composer Jake Kaufman] to make this soundtrack really fun!" - Yacht Clubs' Nick Woznia
Nintendo's more relaxed approach to indie devs...
"Nintendo's changes have made it possible for us to develop for them; namely they relaxed rules on who can get dev kits, and changed how their eShop works. Both are much more indie-friendly now, and they have also been also gracious enough to answer all of our questions." - Yacht Club's Sean Velasco
On moving away from the sexy characters of WayForward games...
"There are pangs of guilt about overly-sexy girls in the games we have worked on in the past at YCG. We didn't want to be necessarily exploitative in The Enchantress' design; we want the Enchantress to stand tall as a badass, just as any of the knights are!" - Yacht Clubs' Erin Pellon

A portion of a GamesIndustry interview with Yacht Club's Nick Wozniak...
GI: Pixel art is a discipline that tapered off as the 3D era of gaming began. With the rise of the indie developer, digital distribution, and crowdfunding, do you see room for more pixel artists in gaming?
Nick Wozniak: Absolutely! At this time, more than any other that I can remember, it's very attainable for a group of like-minded people or even individuals to make games that follow their own visions. Since they aren't bound by what the publisher demands of them, the choice of art style can be made completely based on the whim of the developer, for better or worse! We've already seen a lot of new takes on the pixel genre in the Indie game-space with games like Cave Story, Super Crate Box, Mercenary Kings, Fez, Mutant Mudds, Volgar the Viking, Swords and Sworcery, Two Brothers, Shovel Knight... the list goes on and on, and I wouldn't expect it to stop! Pixel art is a skill picked up by those who grew up playing their NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, etc. The desire to make games is a strong part of their blood and so is a youthful attachment to pixel art; it's very natural that those two concepts would converge now that they have the opportunity to!

Release date: 26th June
June 26th!!! Mark your calendars! Tell your friends! We have official word from Nintendo and Steam that Shovel Knight will be released and playable on the 26th of this month! Get ready for the greatest 8-Bit inspired adventure game to sweep you off your feet and deliver pure fun directly into your soul. We’ve worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for more than a year to bring this game to you; we’re extremely proud of the result, and we hope you love it just as much as we do. We hit some snags along the way and we’re sorry that we couldn’t deliver it sooner, but, hopefully, it will prove more than worth the wait! For all of you backers who have been following the adventure since the beginning, we have a few more surprises today too!
As an important note, this release date of June 26th for Shovel Knight 1.0 is for the American region on Nintendo’s eShop for Wii U and 3DS. This includes USA, Canada, and Mexico. We’ve been working through localization and ratings specific to the European region. Hard working developers and publishers who have come before us have helped improve this process and so we have been receiving great support. We hope that we will have good news to share soon. The PC/Steam version will be an international release.
