August 2022 NPD: top 20 best-selling games in the U.S.

 

State of the market

August 2022 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories declined 5% when compared to a year ago, to $4.10 billion. This total is slightly higher than the $4.07 billion total reached during the August 2020 tracking period.

 

US NPD HW - Video game hardware dollar sales grew 14% when compared to a year ago, to $375 million, helped by improved supply of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Year-to-date hardware spending declined by 4% to $2.9 billion.

 

Hardware

PlayStation 5 was August's best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales. Switch has sold the highest number of units in 2022 thus far, while PlayStation 5 led the market in dollar sales.

 

As was noted in July, both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series again experienced double-digit percentage growth during the month when compared to a year ago.

 

Software

Madden NFL 23 debuted as the best-selling game of August, while also ranking 5th among the best-selling games of 2022. This is the 23rd consecutive year that a Madden NFL franchise release was the best-selling title of its launch month.

 

Marvel's Spider-Man jumped to 3rd on the best-selling titles chart for August - up from 84th in July. Marvel's Spider-Man was the month's best seller across tracked Steam titles.

 

Horizon II: Forbidden West ranked as the 12th best-selling game of August, driven partially by price promotion. The title ranked 28th overall on July's chart. Horizon II: Forbidden West currently stands as the 4th best-selling game of 2022.

 

Mobile

Sensor Tower US Mobile - Mobile gaming spend continues to take a hit from economic woes and a softening of demand amid the return to business as usual for most Americans. Despite the double-digit decline, it avoided as precipitous a fall as July by two percentage points, at 10%.

Era un po' che Nintendo non perdeva la vetta, no?

Sostanzialmente PlayStation 5, quando è ben distribuita, stravende. Il brand è rimasto fortissimo anche in USA direi. E questo dato mi impressiona "Horizon II: Forbidden West currently stands as the 4th best-selling game of 2022".

Ma perché, c'erano dubbi ?
Non è successo niente di rilevante nel passaggio a questa generazione.

Nel senso che non c'è niente di comparabile al passaggio dall'era Ps2 a quella Ps3 con la pleteora di errori senza limiti fatti da Sony che hanno ridimensionato la sua leadership bel settore home console.

Lots of reports of improved PS5 supply in the past few months, but no data until now. Import data into the US confirms that Sony Interactive (PlayStation) shipments in Sept were +400% YoY. Yes you read that right. Some of that will go into inventory for GoW launch for sure.

 

Data requires more interpretation to get the right sources, but based on my estimate Xbox supply into the US in Sept +89% YoY.

 

Switch: Sept -59% YoY BUT company is ramping production and is using airfreight (this data is sea freight), hence may not be as bad as shown

Son dati solo sul peso e solo marittimo dell'intera sezione interactive, quindi non solo ps5, un aumento c'è stato sicuro, ma siam lontani dal quadruplicare il distribuito.
