On a Ys SequelOn Ys vs Trails
- “If we can evolve a new and different systems. It might be time to go back to the basics or reexamine things here and there.”
- “Ys X is a blank sheet. If we are to do it, I’d like to make something memorial-like.”
- “Platform has yet to be decided, but if everyone wants to play on PlayStation 5 then it’ll be that. If the PS4 is still healthy, then maybe PS4.”
On what’s next for Ys IX
- “I’m often asked overseas if I’d make something VS. However, after putting together a ‘to-do list’ I found that I wouldn’t be done until I’m about 60-years-old. I need to take care of that somewhere in there.”
- “I’d also like to remake Ys 1. Things will certainly never end if that happens [laughs].”
- “I’d like to be around to see the Trails series conclude, but I’m not sure whether I’d still be healthy by then [laughs].”
- “The update at the end of November is expected to be its final update.”
- “If it ever releases on PS5 then we might do something big. Like make Aprilis playable, or something.”
On Muramasa: The Demon BladeOn Dragon’s Crown
- “It didn’t pass with Sega or Atlus. Thinking rationally, all I could say was ‘Hello, this is Kamitani from Princess Crown, the pre-launch of Fantasy Earth: Zero, and the to-be-released GrimGrimoire and Odin Sphere’ at the time.”
- “The company was close to shutting down around the time Odin Sphere released, but Marvelous told us they liked the project and made it a reality.”
- Dragon’s Crown was initially a project for the Wii.
- “It was well-received when I presented it to a senior at Capcom, but supposedly one of the higher-ups asked ‘But can it sell like Monster Hunter?’ and the project didn’t go through.”
- “That’s where we met Ignition.* They immediately gave us the OK.”
- “Ignition had no complaints. The target was Xbox since we wanted to develop for a worldwide audience, or something like that.”
- “Dragon’s Crown is a title that wasn’t meant to sell that much. The publisher wanted the next game before sales started. Our goal is to continue making games and the sales come as a result of that, but if we were to flip that around then…”
- “I’m glad it sold well, but I personally thought it was bad as a strategy.”
- “As work becomes more readily available but that set higher hurdles. If we were to fail on a 4-5 year course… then what would we have done?”
George Kamitani: (On why put the effort into food): “I thought about putting in something that feels good. I like eating and I like perverted stuff. Ecchi is difficult to sell on consoles, so you could say that’s how the delicious-looking foods started.”
“Princess Crown was originally an action game. Sega said during the presentation ‘We want an RPG’ so I went ahead and said ‘It’s an RPG.’ The programmers there went with it too. After that we asked ourselves ‘What do we do…
Sega introduced me to Atlus. They said ‘We brought Purikura* to a ‘Purikura’ company!”
(Editor’s note: To explain Kamitani’s joke and pun, Princess Crown is shortened to “Pri-Cro” in Japanese. It is spelled and pronounced プリクラ “Puri-Kura”. However, Purikura is mostly known as the shorthand for “print club,” the Japanese digital photo sticker booths. Sega produces Purikura machines, so there’s the connection.)
“We had a project over at Sony Computer Entertainment (Now Sony Interactive Entertainment) for about two years. However, a change in organization structure put the project on standby. A concerned individual made an introduction which would end up becoming Enix’s online game Fantasy Earth Zero. ( George Kamitani worked for Square Enix as the director for Fantasy Earth: Zero.)
“There isn’t a guaranteed method for making good games but there are some things that you can’t do. Everything we learned from Princess Crown in retrospect went into Odin Sphere.
“Bending the concept halfway through. If you’re going to do that, you might as well start from the beginning. Also, no outsourcing. The reason is because they wouldn’t put their lives on the line. Well, it may vary from person to person whether they would or not, but it’s a business. You can’t help it when publishers or the outsource company only offer minimum support because they want to stay within budget. It’s rare to have something good without budget involved.”

“Obviously this is a Square Enix property so we can’t really say anything, but I have kind of mentioned to them before, ‘Shouldn’t we consider a third entry?’
So we’ve been talking a little about maybe putting out a third entry, but really the big thing is between I and II there were so many improvements made. If we were going to go from II to III, what else can we put in to really impress the players who played both games that will get them really excited and really emotionally moved by it? So there are a lot of hurdles. What would it be that we can put into the game? That’s still something we’re not sure how to do yet.”

Riguardo Gladiux, su Famitsu vengono riportate alcune info:
