considerazioni di analisti:

Hardware

"The Xbox 360 was the best-selling console hardware system for the month, realizing an incredible 68% increase over last November."

"The best-selling system overall was the Nintendo DS. It was a high/low story for the DS this month with the new red SKU providing the most sales and the white, lower-priced SKU being #2. It appears the DS attracted two pockets of consumers: those looking for a unique limited-edition product and those looking for value."

"We expect a big jump in sales in November due to seasonality and the influence of holiday, but the change this November over October is bigger across most platforms than it was last November. This could point to the impact of aggressive retail promotions during the critical Black Friday week."

Accessories

"The Xbox 360 Kinect was the best-selling accessory item in November. With one month of sales, it's the top-selling accessory item in terms of dollar sales on a year-to-date basis."

"The Xbox 360 platform contributed five of the top ten accessory items for the month."

Wilson also expressed disappointment in sales of Kinect games. Despite the hype Microsoft's motion-sensing camera system generated, Wilson said software for the unit totaled sales of $57 million, or about 4 percent of game sales for the month. Wilson didn't weigh in on the peripheral's most highly promoted titles, but he did say that Electronic Arts' third-person shooter Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 (the 360 version of which supports Kinect) was another disappointment, as the blockbuster movie tie-in sold fewer than 100,000 copies.

"November sales represent the best November on record in terms of new physical retail sales. It bests November 2008 by roughly $30 million, and that time frame was at the height of the music/dance genre sales."

"All categories were up over last year with the exception of portable hardware and software."

"The 360 platform accounted for over 40% of total industry sales driven by the successful launch of Microsoft's Kinect. Xbox 360 accessories accounted for 60% of that categories' dollar sales this month."

"Based on typical seasonality trends, new physical retail sales should come in between $18.8B-$19.6B. The higher end of that range would essentially be flat to last year. Gains in November offset a good portion of the year-to-date declines."

"Remember that this data set represents new physical retail sales only. We have begun to report on sales realized through other channels such as used game sales, digital distribution and mobile apps among others. In the first half of 2010, new physical retail sales at the total industry level accounted for approximately 70% of the total consumer spend against the industry, and while that is likely to change when full year results are tabulated, it gives some context with which to evaluate the portion that new physical retail sales represents."

Software

"Black Ops debuted as the best-selling game in its launch month (in history) with black ops selling 8.4 million units at retail in the U.S. With only one month of sales, it has become the 7th best-selling game of all time, life-to-date."

"Black Ops accounted for 25% of all video game software units sold in the month of November."

"The Music/Dance genre increased 38% in unit sales over last November fueled by Just Dance 2 and Dance Central."

"We are now reporting sales at the total platform level instead of the SKU level but if we were reporting the top 10 SKU's, Halo: Reach would have been #10 this month."

GENNAIO 2011

NPD: Call of Duty Still Tops as Game Industry Dips 5% in January

After a massive December, the U.S. games industry has come back down to post-holiday levels and sales weren't quite up to last year's results. The grand total dipped five percent to $1.16 billion, as hardware fell eight percent to $324 million and software declined five percent to $576 million. The one area to see an increase was accessories, which jumped six percent to $235.1 million. That's likely because Microsoft's hot-selling Kinect camera is tracked by NPD as an accessory.

In terms of software, two of the big holiday sellers carried their momentum over into January, as Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops controlled the top spot, while the dance category continues to be popular, as evidenced by Ubisoft's Just Dance 2 taking the second spot. You could make the argument that Ubisoft was really the big winner in January, as three of its titles made the top 10.

It's worth noting that EA's Dead Space 2, which is selling much better than the original, placed a very respectable third on the chart.

Here's the top 10 list from NPD:

Quote:
Is it fair to compare the launch of the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo DS?
It really is apples and oranges. When we launched DS we launched going right into the Thanksgiving week (in 2004). From a pure timing seasonality, you are not going to be able to compare the two launches. We are going to be continuing to sell DS and that platform is going to continue to build on its legacy of the best-selling hardware system ever in the US. I would love to have the Nintendo 3DS eclipse that, but this is a new platform that we have just given birth to. I would love to have ongoing comparisons to the DS business because that would certainly mean we are doing a good job growing the Nintendo 3DS business.

There haven't been sellouts of 3DS? Are you purposefully underpromoting it?
I would characterize it as a launch where we learned significant lessons from the launch of Wii and we made sure to have not only ample supply in the marketplace, but we staged supply so it would not sell out. We had product going direct to store and we also had product in retailers (distribution centers), so they could easily replenish when they had stores running low on inventory. That strategy is why you didn't see massive sellouts on Nintendo 3DS. Obviously, a sell-through of 400,000 units in one week is exceptional. And the fact that we achieved that without people being worried about massive stockouts and shortages just underscored how we properly executed our supply chain.

Are there any foreseeable concerns about impacts on 3DS manufacturing with the catastrophes that have hit Japan?
At this point, we can say that there are no negative repercussions to our supply chain from the tragedies in Japan. But as you know it's an evolving situation and it is something we continue to review very closely and attempt to manage as small an impact on our business as possible.

Analysis from NPD's Anita Frazier:

A light slate of new releases is at the heart of this month's performance."

"Overall, the Xbox 360 platform has contributed 34% of year-to-date revenues (across hardware, content and accessories) generated by new physical retail sales, gaining 7 share points over last year."

Hardware
"The PS3, PSP and the Xbox 360 all experienced unit sales increases over May 2010. The top selling platform for the month was the Xbox 360, which has realized nearly a year and a half of month-over-month unit sales increases."

"Sales of the 3DS were light, but with next Sunday's release of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, we will begin to see a slate of strong content come to market for the 3DS, which should help to significantly boost sales of hardware during the remainder of 2011."

"Combined sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 (HD hardware) are up 28% for the month and 21% year to date. Although the declines in console hardware sales in 2011 are attributable to the Wii, the platform remains the best-selling of this generation at nearly 36 million installed in the U.S."

"At the current rate of growth and decline (on a year-to-date basis) for each of the respective console systems, a year from now the Wii will still enjoy the lead in install base in the U.S., although both the Xbox 360 and PS3 will close the gap. Of course, new details on hardware introduction could certainly change the picture."

Software
"This month's story really is about a light new release schedule as compared to last year. There were 42 new SKU's introduced in May as compared to 58 last May, and 72 in 2009. This is reflected in the share of dollars contributed by May releases, which was 28% in 2011 as compared to 41% last year."

"As a result of a lighter release slate, promotional activity at retail and in circulars was reduced as well, which undoubtedly affected not only planned but impulse purchases."
"The top genres contributing to the decline in new physical software sales were Action/Driving hybrid (Red Dead Redemption) and Platform/Scrolling Character (Super Mario Galaxy 2). Despite strong continued sales of Pokemon Black & White, the RPG genre also declined since the new games did not comp the performance of HeartGold and SoulSilver last year. Dance games, first-person shooters and general adventure grew, primarily due to notable titles like Just Dance 2, Brink, Portal 2, and L.A. Noire."

"For the month, unit sales were down across all platforms except for Xbox 360, which was essentially flat to last year (+1%)."

"Keep in mind that purchases of content are increasingly occurring in digital format, and May saw a notable digital release in the second map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops which was titled Escalation. Undoubtedly, this shifted some dollars that might have been spent on new physical content at retail."

Accessories

"Four of the top 10 items in accessories were points or subscriptions cards. Those four items represented 15% of all accessory units sold in May 2011."

2011 continues to be the year of Xbox 360, selling more consoles than any other platform 11 of the past 12 months in the United States. In the seventh year of its lifecycle, Xbox 360 is on pace to have the biggest year in its history, a feat never achieved by any console in history.

May 2011 NPD highlights include:
· Xbox 360 sold 270,000 units in May, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)

· Xbox 360 console sales during May were up 39 percent year over year, the largest growth of any current generation console on the market. May also marked the seventeenth month of year-over-year hardware sales increases. (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)
· Xbox 360 game sales reached $140 million in May. (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)
· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in May (hardware, software and accessories) reached $265 million, still the highest among current generation consoles. (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)

· During the month of May, four of the top ten console game titles were for Xbox 360 including: "L.A. Noire," "Portal 2," "Mortal Kombat," and "Brink." (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)

The second half of 2011 promises to be monumental for Xbox 360 with the biggest blockbuster games, Kinect games and experiences, as well as movies, music and TV together all in one place. This will propel Xbox 360 to be number one worldwide by the end of the year, out-selling PlayStation 3 and Wii

GIUGNO 2011

Sony has just sent out its statement in reaction to the NPD Group's June data. Sony did not state how its PS3 sold for the month, but took the opportunity to boast about its exclusive games on the console.

"According to the latest NPD report, PlayStation continues to see growth in software with a strong demand for exclusive PlayStation 3 franchise titles. The recently launched inFAMOUS 2 was the #1 software SKU in June. In addition, momentum is accelerating with the upcoming fall releases of Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 on the horizon. This week the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta surpassed 1.5 million unique players, demonstrating the strength of the PlayStation platform and consumers' interest in gaming experiences that combine rich stories, challenging gameplay, and exhilarating 3D immersion," said Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA.
