Set in the virtual reality world of Mobius, the story of Caligula follows nine men and women that aim to return to the real world. It is a “next generation juvenile RPG” that focuses on modern pathology and trauma. Its title, “Caligula,” refers to wanting to see things we’re not allowed to see, or doing things we’re not allowed to do.

The protagonists are locked up in Mobius, a virtual reality world in which all human beings spend their days repeating high school life to become an ideal high school student. Everyone within Mobius has forgotten the real world. For different reasons, each of the protagonists realize that Mobius is not the real world and form a “Going Home Club” with the desire to return home, and start looking for a way back. However, there are some members who suffered in reality and sought salvation in Mobius, and carry a darkness that can not be shared with the others.

Mobius is an ideal world created by the vocal software “μ.” People escape the despair of reality in Mobius, and those saved by her song are granted their every dream. In Mobius, there are men and women regardless of age that become high school students and live out a three-year student life on a loop.

Here are some of the characters:

  • μ (voiced by Reina Ueda) – Vocal software created by man. The originator that created Mobius in order to save the protagonists from harsh reality. As the creator of Mobius, μ is practically its God.
  • Protagonist (voiced by Chiharu Sawashiro) – President of the Going Home club that aims to escape Mobius.
  • 柏葉琴乃 (voiced by Rie Murakawa)
  • 佐竹笙悟 (voiced by Shunsuke Takeuchi)
  • 篠原美笛 (voiced by Rie Takahashi)
  • 巴鼓太郎 (voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya)
  • 神楽鈴奈 (voiced by Minami Tanaka)
  • 峯沢維弦 (voiced by Yuichiro Umehara)
  • 守田鳴子 (voiced by Ari Ozawa)
  • 響健介 (voiced by Shouta Aoi)

Battles in Caligula occur when you encounter an enemy while exploring a dungeon. Battles are a seamless transition and use an orthodox system at its base, while also introducing a combo-connect system. When you select your command, the protagonists’ fantasy is visualized, and the predicted actions of friends or foes is reproduced. In addition to experience points, enemies will also drop skills, and there are a variety to customize.

The protagonists oppose the “Ostinato Musicians,” composers that provide music to μ and who plan to destroy the Going Home Club that are disrupting the order of Mobius as traitors. Famous sound composers of Vocaloid and such are working on the game.

The following musicians offer music to μ:

  • Kagi-P (40mP) (voiced by Shouta Aoi)
  • Suite-P (Oster Project) (voiced by Emi Nitta)
  • Shounen Doll (PolyphonicBranch) (voiced by Yumiri Hanamori)
  • Mirei (Chouchou-P) (voiced by Eriko Nakamura)
  • Ike-P (Asa) (voiced by Soma Saito)
  • Shadow Knife (164) (voiced by Yuma Uchida)
  • ??? (YM) (voiced by ???)
  • Throrn (cosMo@bousou-P) (voiced by Yuka Otsubo)
  • ??? (Mitoki-P) (voiced by ???)

The theme song is sung by a special unit consisting of Eriko Nakamura, Emi Nitta, and Yuka Otsubo.

Here are some other details, via an interview in the magazine:

  • The word “Caligula” won’t necessarily appear in the game. It embodies the experience of playing the game.
  • The characters that appear in the game have violated a variety of taboos.
  • There was a certain taboo that the developers decided, “it would be best to avoid,” but Satomi instead created a character that maximized the taboo. That character is still going strong.
  • The music sung for μ is by composers that are active on video upload websites and such.
  • At first glance, combat is flashy like an action game, but since the actions are command-based, you can enjoy the game while carefully selecting your commands.

Development on Caligula is currently 50 percent complete.

Il titolo ha destato il mio interesse, anche se non ho ben afferrato il senso. "Its title, “Caligula”, refers to wanting to see things we’re not allowed to see, or doing things we’re not allowed to do".

?

A meno che non sia stata semplicemente la scelta di un nome che suonasse esotico, ignorandone il background storico :asd:

■ Imaginary Chain

“Imaginary Chain” is a system used during battle that lets you see how your selected commands will play out beforehand by visualizing a “fantasy.” The “fantasy” will update for each member action you select, so while first pre-reading the actions of both allies and enemies, you can then put them into effect. It’s a system where anyone can easily put together a string of fancy combos.

Basic Flow

1. One of your allies lands an attack with the Launch attribute. The enemy is confirmed to launch into the sky, unprotected.

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_001.jpg

2. To continue launching the enemy, you select an attack aimed for the sky. Within the “fantasy,” you confirm that the enemy gets hit.

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_002.jpg

3. A pursuit attack is selected for the third ally. The “fantasy” is updated, showing the enemy defenselessly knocked down when the attack connects.

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_003.jpg

4. Finally, the fourth ally selects a finishing blow. Within the “fantasy,” you confirm that all four allies’ attacks connect, and put them all into effect.

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_004.jpg

5. When the stopped time begins to move again, your consecutive attacks are put into effect and the enemy is greatly damaged.

■ More Than 500 Unique Students

In the ideal world of “Mobius,” where you’ll spend your time living the ideal academy life just as you please, more than 500 students will appear. Every student has their own name and profile, and each has their own traumas that they dealt with in the real world, but have forgotten in Mobius. Your relationships with them may be a clue to escaping Mobius…

Inside Mobius, it’s possible to communicate with everyone.

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_006.jpg

As a result of communication, the people you talk to’s reactions will also change. Every one of them are enjoying Mobius.

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_007.jpg

By growing closer with the people you talk to, their profiles will eventually be disclosed. Nothing else like this exists where there are more than 500 students.

■ Catharsis Effect

The Catharsis Effect is a strange talent that only appears in Going Home Club members. It causes a black mass breaks through their skin and take on the form of a weapon. One feature common to all members is a stake that ruptures painfully through their chest and grows flowers. Its shape varies greatly depending on the person, and it is said to strongly represent the person’s inside against their will.

Shogo Satake

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_013.jpg

Shogo’s Catharsis Effect takes on the form of a bizarrely huge pistol. Both of his hands are fitted with solemn handcuffs. He is hysterical, a side unlike his usual self… In battle, he is a mid- to long-distance attacker.

Mihue Shinohara

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_015.jpg

Mihue’s Catharsis Effect takes on the form of a hammer. Her mouth, which you would expect to be a charming feature, is covered with manifested armor. She is a girl who doesn’t hide her disgust and slings attitude freely, but what caused her to have such a black heart?… In battle, she is a short-range, high-power attacker.

■ Ostinato Musician: Sweet-P

  • Name: Sweet-P
  • CV: Emi Nitta
  • Character Soundtrack Composer: OSTER project

Caligula_2016_03-11-16_017.jpg

A fashionista who lives by the creed of “dreamy cuteness” and acts both as Mobius’ fashion leader and as an Ostinato Musician. Her eyelashes are long and her eyes big and beautiful. She writes music that sounds just like she looks—girly, pastel, fairy-tale songs that girls tend to like. She is a popular musician that some women go crazy for.

Prologue

Caligula_03-18-16_001.jpg

—Come hear the voices from within the darkness. The main voice called itself “Muse.” When asked, you answer with your own name. Muse proclaims proudly, “It is best to forget the painful reality.” “From now on enjoy your life to the fullest.” The painful reality… You can already no longer remember anything of the sort. Perplexed and in another place, Muse says “Welcome to Mobius,” telling you the name of this world. At that moment, your consciousness was cut.

When you become aware, you realize you’re in Kishimai High School. As your consciousness drifts out of a haze you vaguely realize the situation. It seems you’re in the middle of a graduation ceremony, and the graduation greetings are going to be performed. After a short time, the rearranging of your memories comes along… And you’re a Kishimai High School first year student. A typical, carefree high school student living an ideal student’s life in the midst of youth.

After some time passed, the school entrance ceremony began. You, who are of irreproachable conduct and excellent grades, and heavily trusted by those around you, were supposed to make a speech as the second year student representative. You go up on stage to make the address. However, a first year representative boy named Kensuke Hibiki then comes up on stage who, just the other day, read a response as a graduate.

Caligula_03-18-16_002.jpg

I remembered the intense discomfort in your eyes as you projected Kensuke’s face to be that of a monster. There are more. You realize that there are similar monsters in the students that would have seemed normal until now. You could not stand the fear, jumped off the stage, and began running to escape.

You noticed, you remember it all. This is a different world. The existence of reality. You experienced pain in reality… But even so, you must return.

“He lacks talent.” “That person, too…” “I’ve seen it…”

During the ceremony that continued as if nothing had happened—where you jumped off the stage—only a few students were staring.

Mobius

Caligula_03-18-16_003-600x265.jpg

An ideal world that the self-developed virtual idol Muse created for the happiness of the people.

Only those who suffer in reality and sympathize strongly with Muse’s songs are invited to Mobius.

In Mobius, people forget the existence of reality, and regardless of age, become high school students, as Muse believes “it is man’s most glorious time.”

Those invited have different appearances and surroundings from reality, and become “the person they wanted to be,” and repeat a high school life that never ends. With the exception of some people, there are none that realize Mobius is not the real world, and unnatural occurrences have become unrecognizable in Mobius.

In order to grant the wishes of her inhabitants, Muse preserves the energy of Mobius’ creation by singing songs composed by human collaborators called “Ostinato Musicians.”

Currently, only an area of the city called Miyabi has been created, with buildings and geographical features composed from the memories of the humans invited to Mobius.

Digihead

Caligula_03-18-16_004-600x299.jpg

The nickname for Muse and Ostinato Musician fanatics.

Emotions are fascinating solidified expressions of the mixed-up feelings within people that pierce the skin. The main characteristic is the acquisition of euphoria. The elevation of violence. A decrease in linguistic ability can also be seen.

Additionally, the people who change into Digiheads lose their self-awareness, and their change of appearance is not noticed by normal Mobius residents that forgot about the existence of reality.

Typically, those whose reason and public face suppress their desire in reality are more aggressive the more dependent they are on Mobius, considering there are no restraints. Mobius is a place thought to be the cause of emotional outbursts. Their existence is affirmed, and that rate of aggressive erosion is increased at a high rate when they listen to the Muse’s music.

Although she is able to attack those who take on a negative attitude towards her, Muse’s only principle of conduct is “to make known the goodness of Muse.”

■ Battle While Using Skills and Rewriting the Future

Depending on enemy behavior and the current situation, there will be cases where you can’t connect a combo. In such a event, by changing the starting character, selecting a skill that corresponds to the situation, etc., you’ll be able to connect combos while rewriting the projected “fantasy” according to the situation.

(1) Kotarou wants to let out a launch attack! But after you check the vision of the attack, you see that the enemy guards and isn’t launched.

Caligula_03-25-16_001.jpg

(2) If the protagonist chooses a technique that hits flying enemies, a combo with Suzuna won’t connect, and Mifue’s chosen attck technique to hit a downed enemy will also misfire. Both failures.

Caligula_03-25-16_002.jpg

(3) So the protagonist changes to an attack with the guard break attribute. If you check the vision, how is the future rewritten…?

Caligula_03-25-16_003.jpg

(4) The protagonist moves forward to break the enemy’s guard. Now to connect the attacks following it… time starts to move.

Caligula_03-25-16_004.jpg

(5) A non-stagnant combo is born, and the enemy is destroyed in one turn. Make full use of your vision to take care of troublesome enemies.

Caligula_03-25-16_005.jpg

■ Students Eroded by Song

The students living in Mobius have a parameter known as “erosion rate.” It shows how dependent they are on Mobius and how far they’ve lost themselves.

Caligula_03-25-16_006.jpg

μ’s music is played in the dungeons ruled by the Ostinato Musicians and the students’ erosion rate increases. Students whose erosion rates have increased turn into enemies, and if they discover you, a battle will ensue.

Caligula_03-25-16_007.jpg

There are various reasons for an increased erosion rate. μ’s music plays and battles carry out in its vicinity… they are a fragile existence that change by the various stresses they receive in Mobius.

Caligula_03-25-16_008.jpg

Students that you would be able to have a normal conversation with until now have been eroded by μ’s music and have turned into enemies.

■ Characters

Kotarou Tomoe

Caligula_03-25-16_009.jpg

Kotarou’s Catharsis Effect takes on the form of gauntlets on both arms. As if to show off its power, they can make a big body look even bigger. In battle, Kotarou is a short-distance attacker and tank. He possesses many dynamic attack techniques as a way to overcome the tides of battle, and with his inherent sturdiness acts as a shield for the members of the Going Home Club.

Kotono Kashiwaba

Caligula_03-25-16_010.jpg

Kotono’s Catharsis Effect takes on the form of a bow and arrow. At first glance, it appears there are also beautiful angel wings, but it can also be taken as a sturdy cage that keeps out intruders. In battle, Kotono is a long-distance all-rounder. She can concentrate her attacks regardless of her position, and is a reliable ally who can also handle a support role.

■ Ostinato Musicians

Mirei (voiced by Eriko Nakamura)

Character Sound Composer: CyoucyoP

Caligula_03-25-16_011.jpg

Headquartered at the Marine Resort in Mobius, she lives a “queen”-like life of comfort served by an entourage of men. She boasts tremendous popularity thanks to her excellence in musical talent and her beautiful appearance. She is fixated on being number one to an unusual degree, and even targets Mobius’ absolute idol μ as a rival.

Ike-P (voiced by Soma Saito)

Character Sound Composer: Asa

Caligula_03-25-16_012.jpg

A second-year student who goes to the same high school as the protagonists. He is Izuru’s classmate and the member of a musical band. He is a genuine narcissist confident in his own appearance, who always maintains a posed look. He seeks the voices of praise from his fans more than anything, and devotes himself to performing concerts as a way to affirm his own popularity.
