Last week, news surfaced that Square Enix is recruiting core staff for Final Fantasy VII Remake and that Naoki Hamaguchi, the main programmer of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and project lead on Mobius Final Fantasy, is project lead on the remake.

During a Mobius Final Fantasy live stream on May 27, Hamaguchi commented on the recruitment listings—which are seeking battle and level planners; background, motion, and video effects designers; and a programmer—clarifying that development has shifted from cooperation with an external studio to an internal focus.

“The information is already available online, but I’ve taken charge on the development side for Final Fantasy VII Remake,” Hamaguchi said. “As for the whole story, (it’s a sensitive topic, but) until now, development was moving forward with external cooperation, but the company has decided to shift to an internal setup, including mass production and quality, because we want to control everything, including quality, on a stable schedule. (I won’t be leaving Mobius Final Fantasy.)”

It was previously announced that CyberConnect2 was one of Square Enix’s partners on the project.

Nomura da famitsu:

  • “We’re switching over to internal production on Final Fantasy VII Remake.” (Further reading.)
  • “Although there are parts [of Final Fantasy VII Remake] further along than Kingdom Hearts III, such as cutscenes, it is unlikely we’ll share information for a while as we switch from mainly external to mainly internal development.”
  • “[Project lead] Naoki Hamaguchi has been a part of this from the beginning and is a member of Business Division 1.”
  • “I, on the other hand, am not a member [of Business Division 1], so the person who is putting Business Division 1 in order concerning Final Fantasy VII Remake is Hamaguchi.”
  • “Similarly, there is Tai Yasue of Business Division 3. In that sense. I am sort of like a cross-sectional mercenary not tied to a Business Division.”
  • “If I belonged to a Business Division, I would basically be working full-time at that Business Divison, so it’s a system that lets me take on various jobs, including requests from other companies.”
  • (Regarding titles that are not Kingdom Hearts III or Final Fantasy VII Remake) “Right now, there isn’t anything that I’m directing, but there are a few things that I’m involved with. I’m not sure when which will be announced. (Laughs.)”

Square Enix is debuting new concept art of Final Fantasy VII Remake at its Final Fantasy “Farewell Stories” 30th Anniversary Exhibition, which will run at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo from January 22 to February 28.

The concept art is part of the “Words Aerith Left Behind” exhibit, in which the Sector 5 Church of Final Fantasy VII is recreated.

Members of the press were invited to attend the exhibition ahead of its official opening, and photographs of the concept art have appeared online.

During a talk show at the Final Fantasy “Farewell Stories” 30th Anniversary Exhibition, which is running Mori Arts Center Gallery in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo until February 28, Square Enix debuted four new in-development screenshots of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Unfortunately, those screenshots were limited to those in attendance, and it was said that there are no plans to release them online for quite some time.

According to Twitter reports from the event, Cloud’s design has changed from what we have previously seen. Final Fantasy VII Remake development lead Naoki Hamaguchi said the new design “finally got the OK from [director and original character designer Tetsuya] Nomura.” Either their hard work paid off or Nomura thought the final design was sufficient enough to recognize it as “the closest to the original [design] among those created so far.” Hamaguchi also said the development system is in good order and doing well.

The screenshots themselves featured Cloud and the members of Avalanche. Twitter reports describe Biggs as super handsome, Wedge as refreshingly chubby, and Jessie as cute. And while Cloud has an immaturity suitable for his age, he is still handsome. Everything seems to have been remade from the previously released trailer.

We are examining programs that implement general functions and contents for Final Fantasy VII Remake as necessary on the development team, and while we are reaching a satisfactory level in terms of reproducing the original title in high-quality graphics, we have come to the conclusion that we should aim for even higher quality in order to meet the expectations of fans.

That said, we will tackle the production of this big title by establishing core members of various positons such as level planner, battle planner, designer, engineer, etc. including existing members of the development team. Interested applicants are expected to work as a core member.

Not a “remake.” “Creation” is the mission we were given.

1997. With dedicated fans and the like even now 20 years after release, it is no exaggeration to say that Final Fantasy VII, which boasts over 11 million total shipments and download sales in the worldwide market, is the masterpiece of the series loved by fans all over the world.

And now we have announced the release of a Final Fantasy VII remake. Due to the huge reaction, we are aiming at nothing less than a “new creation” not limited to a simple remake.

It should be noted that this is an internal production. After 20 years, the staff behind the original Final Fantasy VII, who are top-rankers in the industry even now, are reuniting. A project to create “a title that surpasses the original” is starting full-scale.

Take on the even more difficult challenge of creating a new title, in a certain sense, alongside top-level creators—. It is a job that will naturally impact growth as a creator, as well the world.

Preserve the existing concepts users hold while creating a new world view. A project that can only be accomplished here is waiting for you.

Recruitment Background

Final Fantasy VII was a major hit all over the world and changed the scene of gaming when it launched. Final Fantasy VII Remake, which brings new life to the title after 20 years, is a project that is attracting attention from both inside and outside of the industry.

Our goal is “the realization of game with quality that surpasses the original.” For that reason, we are continuing the recruitment of internal development staff.

Detailed Work Content

  • Battle Planner
    • Planning and specifications creation of a battle system that combines commands and action.
    • Devising of ideas such as enemies and bosses.
    • Construction of environments including setting parameters aligned to the player’s growth
  • Level Planner
    • Construction of a workflow for location production.
    • Devising of ideas for the level designs of each location.
    • Implementation of data in Unreal Engine 4.

Create a “new Final Fantasy VII” not limited to a simple remake as a new Final Fantasy with action elements added to the traditional strategy, and deliver your creativity to the world.

Assigned Department

1st Business Division is the department [of Square Enix] working on Mobius Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy VII Remake. In addition to staff that worked on the original Final Fantasy VII, staff that worked on previous generations of the Final Fantasy series are joining the team one after the other. This is the chance to work with us on a “new Final Fantasy creation” not limited to a remake.

  • “The scenario will also delve into the members of Avalanche.”

At a closed event for The World Ends with You: Final Remix held on October 30, producer Tetsuya Nomura answered various fan questions. One of them was simply, “I want to play Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII again!”

Nomura responded, “Not everyone may know this, but I’m remaking Final Fantasy VII… (laughs). Right now I’m concentrating on Kingdom Hearts III, but when that’s finished, VII will be where I head next. I’m thinking about ideas regarding the remake’s release—I even spoke to producer Kitase about it today. All of us old-timers are considering various developments in regards to what accompanies the remake. Like if we can manage to do something about the Compilation [of Final Fantasy VII] titles too. But for the time being, please wait for VII‘s turn to come.”
