It was back in June 2005 when Sony at E3 2005, showed the general public a stunning video of Killzone 2 for PS2. A visual rendering incredible, too much for a "simple" console. The details in the video were impressive, too, so that journalists wondered if it was all true, or if the Nissan had proposed a movie in computer graphics passing it off in-game.
After a few months, the game came out, it was realized that such great magnificence graphic was lost along the way and that, pad in hand, Killzone 2 was not remotely close to the amazing trailer of E3 2005.
The years pass and history teaches, however, not to Sony. The most recent facts concerning the PS4, the latest, with the Japanese giant who tries to bewitch everyone thanks to beautiful video games coming out, impersonating sequences in computer graphics (or demos that run on PC by high performance) for the technical capabilities console.
The first was Killzone Shadow Fall, followed by inFAMOUS: Second Son, Driveclub and, most striking case and recently, Uncharted 4.
Shadow Fall, presentation of PS4, sported bright colors, dynamic lighting effects and particle incredible, rich texture. The final game then underwent a downgrade that did not go unnoticed, as evidenced by these shots:
As you can see in the final version of the game, the level of detail was lowered general and losers were also numerous lighting effects, textures, 3D models. The result is still very good, but does not reflect with what was presented in February 2013.
The same fate befell then to another AAA game exclusive PS4, namely inFAMOUS: Second Son, another game that pointed to the absolute fidelity graphics and that, on balance, also suffered a downgrade of view.
Sucker Punch, game developers, they hid behind the excuse that the game was left as it was, but he had been working on the "style" of the title. No downgrade then? The images testify to the contrary, even in this case:
Lack of dynamic shadows, polygonal models flatter, less detail general. Soon after, they included Driveclub, always shown with detailed images and video that they showed some effects really splits from jaw but that, in the end, did not occur in the full game (when complete you can define today ...).
Even in this situation we find less manicured landscapes (remember the track covered by 1 million trees all fully polygonal? Only a few left in the final build and many had become simple 2D texture).
Without forgetting the past also in the audience 3D ... 2D, but the news did not stir as Forza Motorsport 5 ... who knows why:
But the most striking, given the importance of the game, was that related to Uncharted 4, presented with great fanfare at E3 2014 with a video that was incredible and that the same developer had to be shouted from the rooftops all stuff in real time and, unbelievable, at 60fps!
Answering questions on Twitter, to some developers Naughty Dog, as the newcomer Corinne Yu (ex 343 Industries, "liberated" from the grip of Microsoft to embrace the super powerful and versatile PS4) that all satisfied, confirmed as that video was in effect the game's graphics.
Obviously all believe it, at least until a few days ago when at the PlayStation Experience the bold Sony has revealed a short (but exciting) gameplay.
What was supposed to represent the setback to all the games seen so far, on the far more powerful PS4 turned out to be a great title, very nice also from a technical, but away from the promises made a few months ago at E3.
I mean, not just what the same Yu admitted in the summer:
Obviously the lack of 60fps and the uber-graphic sparked several controversies around the web, with specialized sites that have not been able to ignore it and talk then the downgrade immediately on Uncharted 4. And to think that many previously portals had praised the work of Naughty Dog really believing that the scenes in CGI were in-game to 100%, as Gearnuke or GamingBolt.
We know however that everything is light years away from that short trailer, as also admitted by Digital Foundry, which ruled the demo of Uncharted 4 in this way
To date, the game is even more impressive technically speaking that Ryse: Son of Rome, released at the launch of Xbox One, yet unattainable, if we include the innovative techniques of rendering adopted in the title of Crytek. And we do not want to disturb Quantum Break.
As you all well know, especially if you follow my Twitter account, a few days ago was held the highly anticipated PlayStation Experience event, a way for Sony to celebrate 20 years of the brand by offering a show entirely dedicated to PS4 and, one of the bombs of the evening, was the exclusive presentation of Street Fighter 5, so direct sequel of the fourth chapter that many have not noticed differences between the two games.
A fighting game that will see the light only on PC and PS4, but not on Xbox One, viewed the agreement between Sony and Capcom. Another surprise announcement, which raised more than a laugh, it was those inherent in the direct port of Final Fantasy VII, also exclusive.
Not a remake, much hoped for by the players, but just direct the revival of the PC version of the game out years ago, no changes or additions to the art assets of relief, if not always intend Trophies as a welcome extra.
What I jumped in the eyes of all, and that was confirmed in the words of a few months ago of Shuei Yoshida, is the absence of big-budget games, the notorious triple A. Aside Bloodborne (which will run at 30fps for technical limits of PS4) the entire show was based on different port / remake (Grim Fandango on all) and the arrival of many indie game.
No coincidence Yoshida had announced that it would be seen less AAA game on PS4, since he himself did not understand why gamers should worship as the high-profile games:
I know that many people are interested only in the games produced with large budgets and frankly I wonder if these players have never tried the indie games released on Playstation 4. For example, Resogun is a great game, offered free to PlayStation Plus members for a long time; [...] However, many have not even downloaded and this is a shame.
The announcement exclusively then Street Fighter 5, although the value of IP is of unquestionable value, was not the "bomb" that many hoped, though, it is a third-party game, the media has passed the thing in cavalry and not have taken on Sony as happened with Microsoft instead following the announcement of the exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider on the Xbox console or after the acquisition of the respective IP and Mojang Minecraft under Microsoft.
Street Fighter 5 of PS4 is a good investment, it is a reward for gamers, a move fits perfectly to Sony, conversely the exclusive Tomb Raider is bad for gamers because the third party titles should arrive on all formats.
No fuss has been raised, no petition made by users of Xbox One, as if nothing had happened.
And if Street Fighter 5 is a PS4 is also true that the new Tomb Raider will never come on the console from Sony, this is because the IP of Crystal Dynamics will have the same treatment of what happened with Ryse: Son of Rome and Dead Rising 3, as explained also by Spencer:
True that the exclusivity will be temporary and that the game, after 6/12 months will arrive on PC, but never on the PlayStation console, at least for this title (future Tomb Raider could return multiformat course, the same with a hypothetical Super Street Fighter 5 ...).
Not by chance, and recent news, the publisher of Rise of the Tomb Raider will be just Microsoft.
Redmond is focusing a lot of this type of exclusive (see right Ryse: Son of Rome, Titanfall, Dead Rising 3) and has other in Serbia, as spilled from Spencer via Twitter, plus a range of IP created by team first party, many of them funded with large sums of money just to carry on Xbox One AAA game of great depth (among the most anticipated and already known there are Quantum Break, Fable Legends, Crackdown, Halo 5, the new Gears of War, Scalebound, Phantom Dust, only these destroy the line-up of 2015 of PS4 ...).
Spencer is moving in the right direction and surprises, for 2015, there will be different. E3 2015 will be an unforgettable experience for fans of Xbox, also from the point of view of the system, which will enjoy, finally, the arrival of Windows 10, the universal App and DirectX 12.
