http://www.andriasan...ragon_detailed/Bandai Namco started off the day at the Jump Festa with its Blue Dragon demo area closed off. According to a sign at the booth, the demo area would open up at 11:45... coincidentally right about the time the extremely lengthy Tales of Hearts stage was about to finish up.
This actually wasn't a coincidence. One of the reason that ToH stage was so long was that Bandai Namco decided to devote a section of it to Blue Dragon. While this may seem like a cheap method of cashing in on the Tales series' popularity (the ToH stage was packed with spectators), there was a good reason for introducing Blue Dragon in this space. It turns out that Hideo Baba, brand manger for the Tales of series, and also the main guest at the Tales of Hearts stage event, is the producer of the new game!
Baba lead the audience in a quick introduction to the game. The introduction began with a trailer, which had text overlays indicating that the regulars are back for the title. Hironobu Sakaguchi was listed as overall producer, with Akira Toriyama as character designer.
(This post originally listed Nobuo Uematsu as the game's musician. He's actually not listed in the trailer next to Sakaguchi, Toriyama, and Baba. His name was shown in a corner of the screen crediting him as one of his original Blue Dragon themes played. It's unclear if he will be contributed new music to the game at this point).
Following the trailer, Baba showed actual footage of the game running on the DS.
As different as the Blue Dragon strategy game was from the original Xbox 360 RPG, this second DS Blue Dragon title looks like it will be an even greater departure for the series. Instead of menu-based battles, combat is now real time. You move your character around on the battle field, directly attacking your enemies. Between moves, it appears that you have to wait for a "Wait" gauge to fill back up before attacking again. You also have access to magic, selectable via large, presumably easily tapped, circles at the bottom of the lower screen. I presume these make your shadows emerge for an attack. The gameplay footage showed shadows emerging directly from characters and attacking.
Joining the shift to an action-based combat system is a shift away from single player play. Blue Dragon is online title. The game allows players near and far to team up in groups of three. Baba mentioned that players can send chat messages to one another as they take on quests.
The game includes a complex character customization system. To create your own character, you start with a default male or female template, then mix and match parts. This isn't an exhaustive list, but the game allows you to select different eyebrows, eyes, hair styles and color, mouth shape, and even voice.
The customization doesn't end when the game starts, though. Equipment has visual effects on your characters. There appears to be a tremendous amount of variation, which the footage showing a character being equipped with glasses, ninja suits and more. The game also lets you equip different shadows now, so you won't be stuck with the same partner.
Single player will also be supported, again with parties totaling three members. Shu and all the other characters from the series appear here -- the trailer showed pretty much everyone. Even in single player mode, though, your own character creation is the main character and appears alongside the pre-created cast in event scenes.
Baba only touched briefly on the game's story, saying that it takes place two years after the events of the original. Despite the continuing story, he says that even those who didn't play the original will be able to play the sequel.
Blue Dragon's second (and hopefully better) outing on the DS will be released some time in 2009.
